Understanding Time Zones

The world is divided into 24 primary time zones, each roughly 15 degrees of longitude wide, corresponding to one hour of time difference. However, political and geographic boundaries mean many real-world zones deviate significantly from this pattern.

UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard. All other time zones are expressed as UTC offsets (e.g., UTC+5:30 for India).

DST (Daylight Saving Time) shifts clocks forward by 1 hour in spring and back in autumn in participating regions.

Common Time Zone Abbreviations

  • UTC/GMT: Universal Coordinated Time — the baseline reference
  • EST/EDT: Eastern Standard/Daylight Time (UTC-5 / UTC-4)
  • CST/CDT: Central Standard/Daylight Time (UTC-6 / UTC-5)
  • MST/MDT: Mountain Standard/Daylight Time (UTC-7 / UTC-6)
  • PST/PDT: Pacific Standard/Daylight Time (UTC-8 / UTC-7)
  • IST: India Standard Time (UTC+5:30, no DST)
  • JST: Japan Standard Time (UTC+9, no DST)
  • AEST/AEDT: Australian Eastern Standard/Daylight Time

Tips for International Meetings

When scheduling across time zones, always confirm whether DST applies to both locations. Spring and autumn transitions often fall on different dates in different countries, causing temporary shifts in the offset between two zones.

Canadian Time Zones at a Glance

  • Newfoundland (NST/NDT): UTC−3:30 / UTC−2:30 — the only half-hour zone in North America
  • Atlantic (AST/ADT): UTC−4 / UTC−3 — Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI
  • Eastern (EST/EDT): UTC−5 / UTC−4 — Ontario, Quebec, Toronto, Montreal
  • Central (CST/CDT): UTC−6 / UTC−5 — Manitoba, most of Saskatchewan's west
  • Mountain (MST/MDT): UTC−7 / UTC−6 — Alberta, and Saskatchewan (no DST)
  • Pacific (PST/PDT): UTC−8 / UTC−7 — BC, Vancouver

Worked Conversion Example

A meeting is scheduled for 2:00 PM EST (Toronto). What time is it in other cities? Vancouver (PST): 11:00 AM (3 hours behind). London (GMT): 7:00 PM (5 hours ahead). Paris (CET): 8:00 PM (6 hours ahead). Mumbai (IST): 12:30 AM next day (10.5 hours ahead). Tokyo (JST): 4:00 AM next day (14 hours ahead). Sydney (AEDT): 6:00 AM next day (16 hours ahead during Australian summer).

The DST Trap: When Offsets Temporarily Change

The US and Canada switch DST on the second Sunday in March and first Sunday in November. Europe switches about 2–3 weeks later in spring and earlier in fall. During the gap between these switch dates, the offset between North America and Europe is temporarily 1 hour different from normal — a common source of confusion for international teams. Always use a time zone converter for the specific date of your meeting, not a static offset chart.

Regions That Don't Observe DST

Notable DST non-participants: Saskatchewan (Canada) stays on CST year-round. Arizona (USA, except the Navajo Nation) stays on MST year-round. Japan, China, India have no DST. Most of Africa does not observe DST. This means that a business relationship between, say, Toronto and Saskatoon involves a time difference that shifts seasonally — they are 1 hour apart in winter and the same time in summer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between UTC and GMT? +

For practical purposes they are the same. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) is a time zone based on the Earth's rotation at 0° longitude. UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is a more precise standard maintained by atomic clocks. In everyday use — scheduling meetings, setting timestamps, expressing offsets — UTC and GMT are interchangeable.

How many time zones are in Canada? +

Canada spans 6 standard time zones: Newfoundland (UTC−3:30), Atlantic (UTC−4), Eastern (UTC−5), Central (UTC−6), Mountain (UTC−7), and Pacific (UTC−8). During Daylight Saving Time most of these shift forward 1 hour. Saskatchewan observes Mountain Standard Time year-round without DST.

Does Canada observe Daylight Saving Time? +

Most of Canada observes DST — clocks spring forward on the second Sunday in March and fall back on the first Sunday in November. Major exceptions: Saskatchewan (stays on CST year-round), parts of northeastern BC, and a few communities in Ontario and Quebec near the Manitoba border.

What time zone is Toronto in? +

Toronto is in the Eastern Time Zone. In winter (standard time) it is EST — UTC−5. In summer (daylight time, March–November) it is EDT — UTC−4. The same zone applies to Ottawa, Montreal, and most of Ontario and Quebec.

How do I convert EST to PST? +

Pacific Time (PST/PDT) is always 3 hours behind Eastern Time (EST/EDT). To convert: subtract 3 hours. For example, 2:00 PM EST = 11:00 AM PST. During DST, both zones shift together, so the 3-hour gap remains constant year-round between these two zones.

Why is Newfoundland half an hour off from other time zones? +

Newfoundland Standard Time (NST, UTC−3:30) dates to the 19th century when local solar time for St. John's was established. When global time zones were standardized, Newfoundland retained this historically established half-hour offset. It is one of only a handful of half-hour time zones in the world, alongside India (UTC+5:30), Iran (UTC+3:30), and a few others.

How do I find a meeting time that works across time zones? +

Use this converter to find a time within business hours (9 AM–5 PM) for all participants. Good overlap windows: North America ↔ Europe: 9 AM–12 PM EST (2–5 PM GMT). North America ↔ India: 7:30–9:30 AM EST (6–8 PM IST). North America ↔ Asia-Pacific: very difficult — typically requires one side taking an early morning or late evening slot.

What is a Unix timestamp? +

A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970, 00:00:00 UTC — called the Unix Epoch. It is widely used in programming, databases, and APIs to store date/time as a single integer. For example, April 16, 2026, 12:00:00 UTC ≈ Unix timestamp 1,776,081,600. Converting between Unix timestamps and human-readable dates is straightforward with a time zone converter.
